Cowork is the part of Microsoft 365 Copilot that carries out multi-step tasks: building a first draft from named files, preparing a meeting pack, pulling research into a structured summary. It works under human direction, shows its plan and bills each task in Copilot Credits.
The licence already covers Copilot Chat, so quick answers, short drafts and simple summaries belong there. Cowork is for work you would hand to a colleague. Teaching people that boundary is the fastest saving in the whole session.
A tight brief names the files, the outputs and the finish line. A loose brief makes Cowork retrieve more, generate more and run for longer, which costs more and reads worse. We practise turning real jobs into briefs that run well first time.
Most tasks land between roughly 100 and 700 credits, which is about 75p to £5 at the metered rate. The training covers the /cost command, sensible model choice and the spending policies, alerts and caps in the Microsoft 365 admin centre.
If a team will run the same job three or more times, it belongs in a skill: instructions, context and process packaged once and reused. Month-end packs, meeting preparation and proposal first drafts are common candidates. We help identify the first few worth building.
