How we work/Training/Copilot Studio apps training

Copilot Studio apps workshop

Copilot Studio apps training, on your firm's own work.

A three-hour hands-on workshop in which a few of your team describe an app for a real job in your firm and build it in Copilot Studio, beside the agents that do the work. It's for the people who know the work and will build, not your IT provider, and no coding is needed.

In preview. Last checked 4 October 2026. Apps in Copilot Studio are a paid public preview that Microsoft is rolling out gradually, so they may not be switched on for your firm yet. We check in the preparation session. What preview means.

What an app is

The agent does the work. The app is where your team sees it.

An app is a simple screen your team opens in the browser: a form to fill in, a list to work through, a button to approve. In Copilot Studio you describe the app in plain language and it builds a working first version, which you then refine by describing what should change.

Microsoft puts apps alongside agents and workflows, so together they cover a whole piece of work. The agent does the checking and drafting, a workflow does the routine steps and the app is where your team sees what happened, checks it and approves it.

An intake form for new work

A new matter or job comes in through one form with the fields your team always needs, instead of an email chain.

A team's deadline tracker

Every deadline for one team on one screen, with who owns it, what's due this week and what's overdue.

A screen for approving drafts

A partner sees what an agent drafted, changes it if needed and approves it, with a record of who approved what.

A simple pipeline for one team

Contacts, opportunities and next steps for one team, in place of the spreadsheet everyone edits.

Copilot Studio or Cowork

We teach in Copilot Studio, because that's where apps end up.

You can build apps in Copilot Studio from the App tile on its home page, or make apps in Copilot Cowork with the /app skill. Apps built in Cowork can be opened and edited in Copilot Studio, so Copilot Studio is where an app ends up either way, and it's where this Copilot Studio app training happens. If your firm is in Microsoft's Frontier programme, we show the Cowork route as well.

What the workshop covers

One app, for one job in your firm, built properly.

Hands-on and follow-along. Each step is shown on screen and everyone does it as they go, on their own machine. Built around your firm's own processes. The exercises use your jobs, not demo material about a company that isn't yours. James Wilkinson shows each step, and the group builds an app for a job your team chose in the preparation session.

Describing the app so the first version is close

What it's for, who uses it, what data it holds and what people do on it. A clear description gets a first version that's close, which saves rounds of changes later.

Choosing where the data lives

An app keeps its data through a connector, so the choice of connector is the choice of database. We settle it before the first description, with the permissions and backups that come with it.

Refining and testing in the preview

Changing the app by describing what should be different, then testing it in the preview on your own cases, including the awkward ones.

Permissions and sharing

Who can open the app and who can see the data behind it are separate questions. Sharing the app doesn't share the data, so both are set on purpose.

Connecting the app to an agent or workflow

The app becomes the screen for work an agent or workflow does: what came in, what was drafted and what's waiting for one of your team to approve.

What it costs to build and run

Where Copilot Credits are drawn when an app is built and used, what your licences already cover and the choices that keep the cost down.

Running costs

What an app costs to run, and who pays for what.

  • Building an app and running it both draw Copilot Credits.
  • People with Power Apps Premium have running the app included.
  • AI inside the app, such as an agent it calls, draws credits either way.

In the preparation session we check your firm's licences, confirm apps are switched on for your firm and agree a spending limit for the session with whoever looks after your Microsoft 365. In the workshop, cost is part of every choice the group makes about the app.

Microsoft's rates change, so we keep the current figures in one place: Copilot Credits explained: what each Microsoft workload costs. How every training session covers running costs is on the training page.

What preview means

Build a pilot now. Don't build the system of record yet.

In preview. Last checked 4 October 2026.

Apps in Copilot Studio are a paid public preview. Microsoft is clear about the limits, and the workshop is built around them.

  • A generated app can be incomplete or wrong, so everything is tested on your own cases before anyone relies on it.
  • The code view is read-only. Changes are made by describing them.
  • Complex apps need building in steps, so the workshop builds one small app well rather than a large one badly.
  • Sharing an app doesn't automatically give people access to the data behind it. Data permissions are set separately.
  • Features and pricing can change before general availability.

Our advice: build a pilot now, on a real job. Don't make it the system of record for client data until apps are generally available and your app has been tested on your own cases.

What is an app in Copilot Studio?
A working app that Copilot Studio builds from a plain-language description of its purpose, its users, its data and what people do on it. You refine it in conversation, test it in the preview, then publish it and share it, and published apps show up for your admins in the Microsoft 365 admin centre. Microsoft positions apps alongside agents and workflows: the agent does the work and the app is the screen where your team sees it, checks it and approves it.
How is it different from Power Apps?
Power Apps builds apps inside your Power Platform environments, with its own tools and licences, and it's still the right home for a governed app on Dataverse. An app in Copilot Studio is generated from a description and paid for by usage, which suits a small, well-defined app that needs to exist quickly. Our post on apps in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio compares them in more detail. Apps in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio: build a CRM without buying Dynamics
Do we need to be in Microsoft's Frontier programme?
No. The Frontier programme is only needed for the /app skill in Copilot Cowork. Apps in Copilot Studio need the new Copilot Studio experience switched on and usage-based billing set up for your firm. If your firm is in the Frontier programme, we show the Cowork route as well.
Do apps use Copilot Credits?
Yes. Building an app and running it both draw Copilot Credits. People with Power Apps Premium have running the app included, but AI inside the app, such as an agent it calls, draws credits either way. Microsoft's rates change, so the current figures are in our Copilot Credits rate card rather than on this page. Copilot Credits explained: what each Microsoft workload costs
Do we need Power Apps licences?
No. Without them, running the app draws Copilot Credits. People with Power Apps Premium have running the app included, so it's worth knowing which licences your firm already holds. We check that with you in the preparation session.
Is it ready for client data?
Not as the system of record yet. Apps in Copilot Studio are in preview: a generated app can be incomplete or wrong, and sharing an app doesn't automatically give people access to the data behind it. Build a pilot now, and keep client data in your existing systems until apps are generally available and your app has been tested on your own cases.
What happens when it leaves preview?
Microsoft says features and pricing can change before general availability, so some details may change. What the workshop teaches carries over: describing an app well, choosing where its data lives, testing it on your own cases and sharing it safely. We'll update this page when apps are generally available.
Which version of Copilot Studio does it use?
The new Copilot Studio experience, because apps need it switched on. Everything in Copilot Studio now runs on one of three harnesses, Microsoft's name for the engine around an agent. The Copilot Chat harness extends Copilot Chat with your firm's own knowledge, and it's what the Copilot agents course uses. The standard harness is classic Copilot Studio, with topics, triggers and agent flows. The GitHub Copilot harness is the new Copilot Studio experience, Microsoft's default since 3 August 2026: it plans its way through a task, works with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files and uses skills and memory. It's part of Copilot Studio and needs no GitHub subscription. The choice is permanent: an agent can't be moved from one harness to another, so picking wrong means rebuilding. Everything on the new experience draws Copilot Credits, which is why we agree a spending limit for the session beforehand. Which Copilot Studio harness should your agent be built on?
What about Copilot Code?
Copilot Code is a tab in Copilot where anyone can describe an app or automation and get one, and it runs on the same Microsoft hosting as apps from Cowork and Copilot Studio. The workshop stays in Copilot Studio, where the app sits beside your agents. Copilot Code and managed runtime explained
